INFORMATIONS Enuresis or bedwetting is a medical term used to describe the fact of involuntarily wetting the bed while sleeping. Night time enuresis affect about 15% of 5 years old kids, 8 % of 8 years old kids and 3 % of 12 years old kids. Without outside help, it can be difficult to determine when your child will stop wetting his bed by himself. Some will wet their bed up to a teenagers age and some time even more. Enuresis is mostly an hereditary problem. It’s generally due to a slower development of the bladder and to deep sleep that prevents the child to feel the need to urinate.
Even if there is no real consequences on the health or physical integrity of your child, the fact is, for your child, wetting his bed can have a significant consequences on his well being and his self esteem. As an example, numerous children feel unable to go to a summer camp or even sleep at a friend’s house because they wet their bed. Ashamed of their condition, many children are afraid to invite their friends for a sleep over because they don’t want their secret to be discovered. In addition, many children become irritable, experience “mood changes”, incomprehension and are ashamed. Sometimes, even parents feel embarrassed or frustrated. In some cases, they may show intolerant and decide to punish the child or prohibit drinking in the evening. The excessive laundry, the costs associated with replacing the mattresses, and the cost of diapers can also represent an irritation factor for the parents.
